Support Team for Adaptive Recreation

Greenville, NC

Pitt County

Adults with physical and cognitive disabilities in Greenville are getting more chances to be active indoors and outdoors with the Support Team for Adaptive Recreation (STAR). STAR is a membership-based activities program for people ages eighteen and up with a disability. Most people enrolled in the program range from 30 to 60 years old. They are supported by the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD). In a support group setting, STAR provides members with socialization, education, and adaptive recreation activities. The program is hosted at the Pitt County Memorial Hospital Regional Rehabilitation Center and can feature activities like swimming, basketball, holiday parties, cooking classes, picnics, and more. They also take their STAR members on overnight beach trips each year. Participants have been able to take part in adaptive water skiing programs, golf lessons, play sports, and do arts and crafts. The program has a small membership fee of $10.00 for the year. STAR receives most of its funding from private donations and grants from Vidant Health. STAR serves people from all over eastern North Carolina, and with over 50 members, STAR makes it possible for adults to experience the outdoors, socialize with similar individuals, and have fun in a safe environment. Becoming a member is easy and affordable. Anyone interested just needs to log onto STAR’s website and complete an application.
